MPEG is a lossy compression method that uses Interframe compression. Interframe compression assumes that although action is happening, the background in most video frames remains the same. This means that it is not necessary to compress each entire frame, but only the differences between them.

MPEG-2 is used by DVD-ROMs. MPEG-2 can compress a 2 hour video into a few gigabytes.
